Christian G. Windfuhr
Chief Executive Officer
Grand City Properties
Mr. Christian G. Windfuhr, Chief Executive Officer of Grand City Hotels (with over 110 hotels) is an internationally seasoned hotelier with experience in Europe, USA, South Africa, Middle East, and Asia / Pacific.
Following some 12 years with Holiday Inn International in Middle East and Asia/Pacific, where ultimately he held the position of Vice President Operations & Development, he was appointed in 1990 to the Board of Directors of TUI, the largest European tour operator, heading up their hotel activities consisting of 5 independently operating resort hotel and club companies with 44,000 rooms.
1995 – 2000, as President and CEO of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, he achieved the financial turnaround of the company, drove international expansion, re-structured the company into a public (listed) company under Swiss law, and created shareholder value by working out a strategic partnership with Kingdom Holding (HRH Prince Alwaleed) and JP Morgan, which included the selling of 40 % shares of the hotel company to these partners. This transaction prepared Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts for accelerated growth in future.
2000 – 2005, Mr. Windfuhr was CEO of MARITIM Hotels, a privately owned hotel company in Germany with almost 12.000 rooms in 44 hotels of which 8 are outside Germany. Maritim is one of the major players in the German hotel market and specializes in large conferences and convention as well as resort hotels.
Before joining Grand City Hotels Mr. Windfuhr served for two years as Executive Director on the Board of the Corinthia Hotels Group based in Malta.
Mr. Windfuhr graduated from the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University in 1974 and in April 2000, he was chosen as one of the outstanding graduates of Cornell University under the “Alumni Showcase” which honours those graduates who have taken the common knowledge and skill provided by the School and used them to give back to the industry and/or community through extraordinary innovation, creation, and revolutionary programs and services.
