Keynote Speech – Walking In The Footsteps Of Ernest Shackleton
The nimrod centenary – return to the pole
By Henry Worsley

In October 2008, three descendants of Ernest Shackleton’s crew of the Endurance and Nimrod expeditions, set out from his hut at Cape Royds to travel 870 miles across the Antarctic Continent to the South Pole. Since Shackleton’s expedition in 1907, more people have stood on the moon than have repeated this journey.

The present day team have followed Shackleton’s route across the Ross Ice Shelf, up the heavily crevassed Beardmore glacier and then onto the polar plateau to a point 97 miles from the South Pole – the furthest that Shackleton reached in January 1909.

The team of descendants reached that point on 9 January 2009 and in the centenary year they
completed unfinished family business and completed the journey to the South Pole.

Henry Worsley, a serving soldier, who is leading the expedition, will be speaking about the original Nimrod journey, his modern expedition and Shackleton’s leadership skills and exceptional judgement. His talk will be illustrated by photographs from the Nimrod and the modern journey and will reference the inspiring diary entries of Ernest Shackleton.
